WHAT IS AYURVEDA Conceived in India and practiced for over 5,000 years, the Sanskrit word ‘Ayurveda’
literally translates to the ‘Science of Life’. Despite being referred to as the
world’s most ancient system of health care, Ayurveda is much more than a physical
science or system of healing. It is better understood as a lifestyle which aims
to guide individuals, to live in harmony both with their external environment
and, more fundamentally; their essential selves.
Ayurveda states that rhythm of a human life is intimately connected with the
rhythm of nature. When the individual is perfectly in tune with their natural
state of being, a flow of creative and vital energy is established unifying the
body, mind and spirit. Perfect health, longevity and a harmonious life are but
a few of the manifestations of such a state.
Ayurveda teaches that the foundation of all material life can be identified in
terms of the elements; Earth, Ether/Space, Fire, Water and Wind. These five elements
hold the entire individual in stasis or equilibrium, through the three principle
dynamic forces or ‘doshas’. Each one of us are born with a unique combination of
these elements within us.
It is the particular combination and extent to which one dosha predominates over
the other doshas which determines an individual’s body constitution, or 'Prakruti'.
Vata: This force consists of the Ether and Wind element which governs all movement
of the individual from micro to macro, within and without.
Pitta: The fire element alone governs the individual’s digestive forces right from
food to thought.
Kapha: The Earth and Water elements come together to give the body its form as well
as the ability to bind and retain.
All disease, according to Ayurveda, is triggered by disturbances in ones equilibrium.
These disturbances may be caused by either external, internal, physical or psychological
factors, altering our magical balance to its current state, or 'Vikruti'.
All Ayurvedic remedies, herbal supplements and treatments are devised to redress
the disturbance and help the individual re-establish that magical tri-dosha balance;
particular to him or herself.
More specifically, this exists when the digestive fire (agni) is in a balanced
condition, the bodily humors (Vata, Pitta & Kapha) are in equilibrium, the
three waste products (urine, faces and sweat) are produces and eliminated normally,
the seven body tissues are functioning normally, and the mind, senses and consciousness
are working harmoniously together.
